Heads 2002-2011

As a child, I was a passionate collector of comics. Inspired by this context and my own expanding imagination, I created a weekly comic called Pencil from which a unique world was born. This encouraged my designs to grow in varying directions and in increasing detail. But aged 14, I created the final issue of Pencil and began to paint. After an inopportune accident that led to the severing of tendons in my right hand, I was no longer able to grip a pencil with my fingers.

Through the exercise and rehabilitation of my hand, I created The Heads series. The states of discomfort and frustration I suffered, coupled with my ongoing social observation, triggered fresh childhood memories and also inspired new characters. I became fascinated with the multiple and contradictory idiosyncrasies that make up the human self, and the ways they are simultaneously expressed that only become apparent in certain situations, and the underlying emotions.
By creating a cast of characters in varying dimensions to represent one self, Goddard shows both man’s psychological complexity as well as his relentless desire for repetition and habit.
