Tom Goddard is a multi-disciplinary artist, working in drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking & collage. Nominated AN magazine’s Graduate of the Year 2004, he was since selected for Young Artist of the Year, National Eisteddfod 2005 and Liverpool’s Biennial 2006 among others. He has exhibited prolifically across the UK and Europe, totalling 42 shows in 4 years.
His work highlights the infinitely peculiar and poignant facets of the individual personality, observed through familiar scenes of modernity. By creating a cast of characters in varying dimensions to represent one self, Goddard shows both man’s psychological complexity as well as his relentless desire for repetition and habit.
Through deceptively simple pieces such as ‘The Admiral,’ - a portrait suspended from the ceiling like a flag, Goddard’s work is both playful and performative, seeming to be both a play prop and an intriguing source of discovery. While exploring the endless evolution of man’s journey of personalities, he simultaneously poises the nervous possibility of digression, with the recurring image of the ape, at every corner.
